Amber

Amber is not a crystal but a fossilised resin from the pine family. (it is not sap)

Note: Copal is often sold as Amber Copal is in fact resin but has not gone through the same ageing process as Amber and has not yet fossilized. It misses by about 39million years!

AMBER is between 40 and 60 million years old. Where Copal is between 100 years and a million years old…….it is immature! True Amber floats in highly salted water. True Amber will burn if touched by the tip of a red hot needle, Copal or resin will melt. Copal will also craze over if you touch it with acetone, (please note this will also affect the Amber and is not recommended for you to try out unless you’re prepared for the outcome.

It has a hardness of: 2 to 2.5

Colour: Amber is clear yellow to a waxy honey-yellow. It can be found with red, brown, blue and green tones. Fossilised insect are often found within it.
